Towards Justice is recruiting a Legal Fellow supported by the Skadden Fellowship Foundation, Equal Justice Works, or other similar program to help us address the wage theft epidemic in Colorado and across the country
About Towards Justice:
Towards Justice dismantles structural barriers to economic fairness through (1) organizing and communications; (2) administrative, local, and state policy advocacy; and (3) targeted impact litigation—all driven by partnerships with immigrant service providers and a legal intake system that serves over 400 low-wage Colorado workers each year. Towards Justice’s litigation program fills a gap in legal services for low-wage and immigrant victims of wage theft while using the law to address systemic injustices in the labor market. For example, Walter Mancia came to Towards Justice about his wages and ended up discussing wage theft on television, organizing his colleagues at an Aurora, Colorado grocery store, and recovering over $300,000 on their behalf. Meanwhile, an au pair in Highlands Ranch, Colorado alerted Towards Justice of systemic injustices in the J-1 visa program. That au pair is now seeking redress for a class of 90,000 au pairs and Towards Justice is using court dates and deadlines to convert long-standing injustices into issues of our day. In the past two years, Towards Justice directly represented 150,000 workers, and recovered over $2 million on their behalf. Workers have used this money to put food on their tables, stabilize housing situations, and pay off their debts. For the population served, even small recoveries can be the difference between eviction and housing stability, dinner at home and dinner at a soup kitchen, or transportation and losing a job.
About the Fellowship Opportunity:
Towards Justice seeks a third year law student, recent law graduate, or current judicial clerk interested in employment law to join us in representing low-wage and immigrant victims of wage theft and other workplace rights violations. Towards Justice will work with selected candidates to develop a proposal that aligns with our organizational goals and the candidate’s interests. We are particularly interested in building our litigation and advocacy initiatives related to the following issues: (1) the increasing use of temporary worker agencies, staffing companies, and other labor market intermediaries in ways that obscure employment rights; (2) the treatment of foreign, non-immigrant workers on temporary work visas; and/or (3) the treatment of low-wage and immigrant workers in the Rocky Mountain I-70 Corridor. We are also interested in expanding our community education program and welcome candidates capable of effectively interacting with immigrant workers and expanding our outreach in rural Colorado. Regardless of the project proposed, applicants should share our passion for protecting low-wage immigrant workers from employment law abuses, and possess the ability to think strategically about how best to influence law, policy and enforcement practices.
